May 2014 Top Foreclosure States

Foreclosures for the month of May has dropped since the month of April according to the most recent RealtyTrac report. When compared between both months, there was a 15,231 difference in properties that are currently in some stage of foreclosure.


During the month of May, the properties that filed for a foreclosure was 5% lower than the previous month in April and 26% lower than last year.

The states that were recognized for having the most foreclosure filings in this most recent report are:

  • Florida
  • Maryland
  • Nevada
  • Illinois
  • Ohio

1) Florida is number one once again with an average of 1 in every 436 units to file for foreclosure. In May, Florida’s foreclosure filings were 8% lower than April’s and 30% lower than last May. The top five counties hit the hardest in FL are: Pasco; 1 in every 284, Flagler; 1 in every 299, Orange; 1 in every 302, Brevard; 1 in every 303, and Saint Lucie; 1 in every 308.

2) Maryland came in second with an average of 1 in every 621 units to file for foreclosure. Maryland’s foreclosure filing for the month of May were 0% higher than the previous month and 5% lower than last year. MD’s top five counties hit the hardest are: Caroline; 1 in every 245, Prince George’s County; 1 in every 348, Charles; 1 in every 374, Washington; 1 in every 441, Calvert; 1 in every 463.

3) Nevada made it back on to the list of top foreclosure states in May’s report with an average of 1 in every 717 units to file for foreclosure. NV’s foreclosure filings were 7% higher than the month of April and 57% lower than last May. The top five counties in Nevada with high foreclosure numbers are: Nye; 1 in every 563, Lyon; 1 in every 571, Clark; 1 in every 618, Carson City; 1 in every 1176, and Douglas; 1 in every 1183.

4) Illinois is no stranger when it comes to foreclosures, the state’s average was 1 in every 790 housing units to file for foreclosure in the month of May. Foreclosure filings for Illinois were 11% lower than the previous month and 23% lower than the previous year. The top five counties in IL are: Mchenry; 1 in every 380, Winnebago; 1 in every 428, Kane; 1 in every 475, Kendall; 1 in every 494, and Will; 1 in every 502.

5) Ohio had an average of 1 in every 805 housing units to file for foreclosure. During the month of May was 7% lower than the previous month and 27% lower than last May. The top five counties with the highest foreclosures filed are: Ashtabula; 1 in every 485, Clinton; 1 in every 490, Madison; 1 in every 497, Trumbull; 1 in every 520, Butler; 1 in every 534.
